Idalbert’S IDEAS

  • School Supply Drive
  • Ask at schools, churches, etc. for new or gently used school supplies.
  • We could do this now and make the appeal based on the fact that school supplies are very cheap right now and parents can simply pick up an extra item or two when they are shopping for their kids. Or they can have their kids donated last years’ supplies that they did not use or don’t want to use again.
  • Can also make this appeal at the end of the school year and put collection boxes in school classrooms.
  • **Not sure if this would work since I do not know how much it would cost to send large amounts of supplies from the states to Haiti. Retrieving the packages once they are sent could be a problem.
  • Better to raise the money and get supplies purchased in Haiti??
  • Summer Bonus for the Teachers in Haiti
  • Summertime is hard on the teachers since they receive no income then. If we have leftover funds, I think we should give the teachers a summer bonus if they agree to renew next year’s contract. This will show them that GHS understands what they are going through, listened to their concerns, and appreciates all their hard work during the school year.
  • School Benches
  • We would need to fundraise specifically for this project since our previous appeals specified that the money raised will be paid to the teachers.
  • Since it is an urgent need, could we front the money for the benches (either with GHS funds or individually/as a board) and then fundraise for it in an appeal and reimburse ourselves later? This way benches could be provided by the start of the school year.
  • School Snack or Meal
  • We must start finding out how much money is needed to provide the kids with a snack each day. In my opinion, this should be moved to a high priority on the list for fundraising.
  • Future Volunteer Projects
  • Soccer camp, English camp, art/music camps

Glory House Services’s LIST OF PRIORITIES

  • Teachers paid consistently and on time.
  • Benches funded.
  • Snack funded/potable water.
  • Need to research potable water options.
  • How much money is needed to provide the on-site kitchen with cooking tools?
  • How much money is needed to stock the kitchen with enough food to provide a daily meal for the kids?
  • How much money would be needed to provide just a small daily snack?
  • If we get a generator, could we get a fridge? Electric burners?
  • How much money would it take to get the bread oven working to provide the kids with fresh bread if we cannot provide a full meal?
  • Bathroom facilities/potable water.
  • What kind of bathroom facilities to put in?
  • Basic outhouses with handwashing station (bucket and soap)
  • Or something nicer? How to get running water though?
  • Teachers get a raise.
  • School expansion.
  • Where to put additional buildings? Would we still use the original building?
  • Would be begin by separating the original building into smaller rooms?
  • Perhaps three buildings split into two rooms each? Or two buildings with three rooms
  • each? (To accommodate the six classes)
  • Generator for electricity? Solar electricity?
  • Inside-school improvements.
  • Whiteboards or chalkboards? Which are better or cheaper?
  • Corner space reserved for a small library stocked with books for kids to read.
  • Paint walls.
  • Corner space reserved for art projects.
  • Volunteer projects and dorm facilities.
  • Soccer camp, English camp, art/music camps
  • Basic rooms with beds, desk,  and a small bathroom with running water.
  • Support for the school in Nordwest Haiti
  • Begin with payment of teachers and go from there depending on that school’s particular situation and needs.
